Bathroom Awkwardness

Dear Optimists,

How many of you know what a urinal is? Basically it’s a toilet to pee in that’s attached to a wall. It’s for men…stand-up pee-ers only. Although I have seen a funny movie or two where a girl uses one. There are little walls between each one and they stand in the middle of a bathroom wall so that, technically, while a man pees, everyone else who walks in can see him from behind. They look like this:

Well, men walk up to them, unzip, whip it out and let the pee go. Nobody sees anything but their back. It’s quicker than using a stall and saves water. But last week after a movie I ran in to take a quick leak and there’s a boy, I’d say around ten or so, peeing at one. The difference is, instead of unzipping, he just pulled his pants down to his ankles right there in the middle of the public bathroom! I quickly looked away and felt VERY awkward at a bare ass in the bathroom. Consequently, I decided to hold it in.

Christmas Music

Dear Optimists,

I’m kind of fixated on the whole Christmas thing right now…the tree is trimmed, the Christmas Lego sets are up, the 100-year-old train set heirloom is running and I’m done shopping. Last week I discussed a few traditions, so now I’m thinking about Christmas music. I refuse to think about it before December 15th, unlike the DJs who start ramming it down our throats on Thanksgiving. So I thought I would go with a discussion on the best Christmas records of all time. And I mean RECORDS.

I have this amazing album called Jingle Bell Jazz on which a jazz band covers a bunch of holiday songs. Best 25 cents I ever spent. It’s one of my favorites. And I could NEVER go a whole holiday season without my favorite two: Beach Boys Christmas and Charlie Brown Christmas. Those two are always playing when it comes time for a Christmas event in my house. Another favorite, which took me years to find, is The Ventures Christmas Album. They kind of mix up carols with their own songs and sound…so much fun!

This year I’ve added a new addition. Even though I think the world has had enough of Zooey Deschanel, the new She & Him Christmas Album is adorable. It’s all cover songs, so I appreciate that they didn’t attempt creating new songs. There are a few with the lovely ukelele that they seem to love in their music, which is a nice addition, and they even did two Beach Boys covers! So yes, I’ve added it to my list.

I also love Mele Kamikimaka. It always makes me think about National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. But heck…we’ll save movies for another day.

Love,
Den

Bad or Good?

Dear Optimists,

With Christmas fast approaching, I thought I would focus on some of my favorite traditions.

As a kid, we would always go to my paternal grandparents’ house for Christmas dinner. One year, my grandfather informed me that santa left me an extra gift under their tree, but it was addressed to me! So here I am, all excited about getting an extra present over my sisters, and when I open it I find…

…potatoes.

Wah waaaaah. My grandfather would razz me, telling me I must have been bad. Apparently he thought santa gave bad kids potatoes! I always hear he gave them coal…maybe it’s an Italian thing?

The worst is that I couldn’t even keep the potatoes. He would take them back, telling me they were his lunch for the next day.

Love, Den

Back in the game – sort of

Dear Optimists,

First of all, thank you for all the get-well wishes, the hugs and kisses. I hope I didn’t transmit a virtual cold or something to you.

But Jesus Christ, have I been ill. It’s like I caught everything possible. It started with a cold in the ears (seriously, that’s a thing… I expected my ears to sneeze or something interesting), then migraine, regular cold and ended with the flu.

People tend to do the weirdest stuff when they’re ill, don’t they? The days that should’ve been spend writing my dissertation I ended up hugging the toilet. I quickly figured out that tiles are very uncomfortable to lie on (surprise!), and ended up getting intimate with a bucket on the sofa under the covers instead. Buckets are way more comfy to rest your head on when you fall asleep…Luckily, I had my boyfriend to take care of me, Mum was there when he was working, and close friends were ringing me every now and then to check up on me. I was on the verge of dying.

The fever is now gone and I’m starting to feel better. Or so I thought. When I looked myself in the mirror this morning, I saw this:

My face looks like a water balloon and I have a cronic duck face (like the ones you see on 14 years old girls on Facebook) – I laugh everytime I come near a mirror. I’m actually smiling on that picture, can’t you tell?

I can’t be the only pathetic, frail sick person out there, am I?

Love,
Nadia.

Babysitting in the morning

Dear Optimists,

I hope all of you Americans had a fantastic Thanksgiving! One day I’d love to experience a real Thanksgiving… hint, hint…

On with today’s post:

As you may have noticed on our facebook page, I’ve been “baby”sitting my Mum’s dog, Camma. She’s absolutely wonderful. Except in the morning…

She was dead asleep, so I decided to sleep some more. But I’d forgotten something…

My alarm clock…

The positive side of this story? Oh well, she got me out of bed and we went for a long walk for an hour and a half. Thing is, I would’ve slept in if it wasn’t for her.

Love,
Nadia.

Optimistic 25

Dear Optimists,

Den really got me, didn’t he? My heart started beating faster from all the love when I read his surprise post, and when I got to the comments my heart exploded with all the love you’d sent my way (on our Facebook page and my Twitter as well!). Thank you all veryvery much!

My 25th birthday was the best (and lasted 25 hours, because of Daylight Saving Time!). I was surrounded by family and loved ones (and cake!) who did everything they could to make my day even more special. They showered me with gifts, it was almost too much for me to handle. I couldn’t stop screaming from the top of my voice: “SCORE!” every time I opened one. Some things never changed.

One of my gifts was a stool. The stool is very special. It spins:I was occupied for the rest of the day.

Love,
Nadia.

Thank you!
